UNIT 3 - READING 2 “An Interview with Naomi Shihab Nye.”



Naomi Shihab Nye writes poems, songs, essays, and books for young people.
She often writes about people from different cultures. In this article, she answers
an interviewer’s questions about her poems and tells what it is like to be a writer.
She talks about her early love for writing poetry and the things she wrote about.
She also offers some advice to young writers who are just starting out.

Her poem “Making a Mosaic” tells about how a mosaic can represent the memories of the person who makes it.



Literary Words

  • extended metaphor: a metaphor is a figure of speech in which one thing is spoken of as though it were something else. An extended metaphor continues the comparison for several lines or for an entire poem.

  • repetition: means saying something again and again. Writers use repetition of words, phrases, or sentences to emphasize their ideas.

  • stanza: is a group of lines in a poem. A stanza may have only a few lines, or it may have many lines. The stanzas in a poem may all be the same length, or they may be different lengths.
